Novena to St Micheal the Archangel September 20th - 28th 2013

St. Michael the Archangel is one of the  Patrons of the Knights of the Militia Templi; being God’s Champion and Prince of the Heavenly Host, this is no surprise. That being said, the great Archangel has another duty that is little known, or at least little talked about, and that is to conduct the Poor Souls from Purgatory to the Kingdom of Heaven.  The primary vocation of the ancient Order of Knights Templar was to conduct and protect pilgrims travelling to the Holy City of Jerusalem.

During a Traditional Requiem Mass, the priest prays at the Offertory: “May the standard bearer, St. Michael, lead them [the Poor Souls] into the holy light.”[1]

Below are a few examples of his mighty intercession:

“It is piously asserted that a Cistercian monk, after his death, appeared to one of his friends, a priest, and told him he would be delivered from Purgatory if during holy Mass the priest would invoke the intercession of St. Michael. The priest complied with this desire, and he, together with others who were present, had the consolation of seeing the soul of his friend taken up to Heaven by the Archangel.

“It is also related that a certain priest, whilst one day offering the Holy Sacrifice for the dead, recommended some souls in a particular manner by the words: ‘May the Prince of the Angels, St. Michael, lead them into the glory of Heaven.’ At the same instant he saw the glorious Archangel descend from Heaven into Purgatory to deliver those souls and to conduct them into Paradise.”[1]

There is a beautiful parallel that exists between Heaven and earth, between St. Michael the Archangel and his Knights. St. Michael conducts the Poor Souls to the completion of their “pilgrimage”, the Heavenly Jerusalem; the ancient Order the Knights conducted (and protected) earthly pilgrims to the completion of their journey, the earthly Jerusalem.

In praying this novena for the relief of the Poor Souls we can please God, our holy patron, and in a spiritual way imitate our ancient brethren.

Please join the North American Preceptory of the Militia Templi in praying the novena (included below) to the great Archangel Michael, that through his intercession the Poor Souls might be aided and delivered from their sufferings.

Sancte Michael, ora pro nobis!
