The Rule of St. Benedict

"The second year of instruction will focus on the history of knighthood and other chivalrous orders. There is a spiritual bond and a direct historical link between the Rule of St. Benedict, the Rule of St. Bernard for the Order of the Temple and the Rule of the Poor Knights of Christ."   Magistral Council 2009

During the Novitiate for Novices there is a required period of study dedicated to the Rule of St. Benedict.  The study of the Rule of St. Benedict, and monasticism in general is a regular part of the continuing formation of individual Knights and in the life commanderies and preceptories.

"the Chapter prescribes that, in every Commandery or Preceptory, regular events be held for the study of Monastic history and of the monastic-military Orders; the Chapter also recommends that every Knight see to the growth of his cultural storehouse;"  Grown and the Critera for Growth of the Militia

Below are a series or resouces and Handouts on the Rule of St. Benedict and our Holy Rule.  To illustrate what the 2009 Magistral council called: " a spiritual bond and a direct historical link between the Rule of St. Benedict, the Rule of St. Bernard for the Order of the Temple and the Rule of the Poor Knights of Christ." This page may be updated from time to time with more handouts.  There are handouts in both English and Spanish because our Preceptory covers all of North

In the Handouts there is a comparison of the Rule of St. Benedict side by side with a similar section to our Rule.  The sections labeled Thoughts and Prayer are taken directly from a book called "The Rule of St. Benedict Arranged for Mental Prayer" by Dom. Bernard Hayes OSB (1908).  The section called More Thoughts are written by us.  The handouts are arranged both for study and for devotion so that Novices can use them when they make their daily mental prayer. We will not be using the whole text, but a series of selections from the Text.

We are uploading talks on the Rule of St. Benedict directed for Novices here on our: Novice Formation Series on the Rule of St. Benedict as an additional resource.
